Renowned Classical Music Talent Show Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Hungary Today 2024.03.26.

The Virtuosos TV program is celebrating its 10th season, marking its inception as a classical music talent show. Originating in Hungary, the program swiftly garnered international acclaim, attracting esteemed artists to serve as jury members and mentors, writes Magyar Nemzet.

The program filled a notable void in TV talent shows by spotlighting young classical musicians, categorizing contestants into three age groups. Among the program’s notable winners are Misi Boros (pianist), Dániel Ali Lugosi (clarinet player), and Ivett Gyöngyösi (pianist), all of whom have since achieved international recognition for their musical prowess.

The Virtuosos serves a dual purpose: to unearth and support budding talent while also promoting classical music to a broader audience. The inaugural season made significant strides toward these objectives, reaching nearly one-third of the country’s population and amassing over 10 million views on YouTube.

Additionally, the program witnessed a noteworthy 14% surge in applications to music schools, signaling a promising future for classical music education.

An integral aspect of Virtuosos’ success lies in its esteemed jury, which comprises both international stars and accomplished Hungarian artists. Maestro Plácido Domingo, opera singer, world-renowned cellist Hauser, and guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas are among the program’s esteemed international jury. Hungarian representatives include soprano singer Erika Miklósa and violinist-conductor András Keller. This diverse panel ensures a comprehensive evaluation of contestants’ performances, enriching the program’s credibility and impact.

Previous seasons of Virtuosos have unearthed remarkable talents, including Réka Kristóf and Ninh Duc Hoang Long (both singers), who have soared to prominence in their careers.

Notable discoveries from 2018 include pianist Soma Balázs-Piri and trombonist Márk Beke, who have pursued further studies at esteemed institutions abroad, affirming the program’s role in nurturing promising musicians.

Furthermore, the program extends beyond the confines of a talent show, offering winners opportunities to collaborate with renowned mentors and perform in prestigious venues. The upcoming concert at Müpa Budapest (Palace of Arts) promises to be a highlight, featuring performances by young artists alongside established figures like András Keller and Csaba Klenyán (clarinet player). This event underscores Virtuosos’ enduring legacy in fostering classical talent and perpetuating the rich tradition of classical music.
