Relations with China are “built on trust and strategic partnership,” States Speaker

Hungary Today 2024.12.17.

László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, recently discussed his official visit to China in mid-November, shedding light on the growing Sino-Hungarian relationship, writes Az üzlet.

Mr. Kövér highlighted Hungary’s strategic importance within China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and emphasized the mutual trust between the two countries, noting, “the Chinese leaders consider Hungary a reliable and predictable partner—a sentiment that, in our view, is mutual.”

He explained that Hungary’s role in China’s economic corridor to Europe reflects its long-term value as a trusted partner. “We are no longer treated as an experiment, but as a proven, trusted partner,” he said, noting the deepening ties since Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President Xi Jinping developed a personal rapport.

This relationship positions Hungary as a key player in Central Europe, respected globally for its ability to represent its national interests outside geopolitical divides.

The economic partnership between Hungary and China continues to strengthen. László Kövér pointed out that China has become Hungary’s most important trading partner outside Europe, with Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) totaling USD 4.3B in 2022, making China the sixth-largest investor in Hungary. The direct flights between Budapest and major Chinese cities further solidify the economic and cultural ties, with Hungary acting as a gateway for China to the European Union.

China views Hungary as a serious and long-term partner,” he affirmed.

The speaker also touched on China’s economic model, explaining the significant role of the state in China’s regulation, but also its fostering of profit-driven private enterprises. “While the state plays a strong regulatory role, China also fosters profit-oriented private enterprises that have become global leaders,” he explained. This model has transformed China into an economic powerhouse, improving the lives of 1.5 billion citizens.

Lastly, Mr. Kövér stressed the value of parliamentary diplomacy, comparing it to fuel additives that enhance governmental relations.

He believes informal exchanges during such visits provide vital insights, facilitating better understanding between nations.

The visit underscored the importance of fostering cooperation and peace globally, as both Hungary and China agree that political blocs hinder progress and economic collaboration.
