Registry of Criminals with Pedophile Offences Made Accessible

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.02.02.

A registry of pedophile offenders is accessible, under strict conditions, to the public from Feb. 1, in line with the amendments to Hungary’s child protection law parliament passed last June, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

After digital identification, Hungarian adults responsible for minors as their parents or teachers will be able to check whether a person in contact with the child has ever been handed a binding ruling on charges connected to pedophilia, the ministry said.

The person requesting the data is required by law to handle the information obtained as confidential, the ministry said. It can only be used to protect children in contact with the person in question, and cannot be made public, copied or filed outside the registry, the ministry said. Violating those regulations is punishable by up to two years in prison, the ministry said.
