Referendum: The Stake Is Whether We Can Prevent Ukraine from Joining the EU, Says Viktor Orbán

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.23.

The stakes of the Voks2025 (Vote2025) referendum are whether we can prevent Ukraine’s accession to the EU and protect the Hungarian people from the dangers this entails, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

The Hungarian Prime Minister made his statement in the wake of the fact that he himself received his ballot paper on Tuesday, meaning that “Voks2025 is in full swing.”

I urge everyone to use the opportunity to express their opinion by voting, because we are asking for people’s opinions on a matter that will determine Hungary’s fate for decades to come,”

he stressed.

The politician noted that Ukraine’s accession to the EU entails huge risks. It endangers the operation of Hungarian companies, destroys our agriculture, puts Hungarian jobs and even pensions at risk, he warned. “Meanwhile, our adversaries, the bureaucrats in Brussels and their proxies in Hungary, are doing everything they can to push through Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The stakes are whether we can prevent this and protect the Hungarian people from the dangers it entails,” he said.

“The fate of Hungary can only be decided by the Hungarian people, and we are also waiting for your opinion,” Mr Orbán concluded. Under the video statement, the text reads: “The Brussels-Tisza pact would push Ukraine into the European Union. Let the Hungarians decide! Have your say! Voks2025 has been launched.”

Fact

The Hungarian government has launched a national referendum on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Like national consultations, it will be sent out to voters, who will be asked to answer the following question yes or no: “Do you support Ukraine becoming a member of the EU?” Ballot papers started to be mailed out last week. While the government’s view is that Ukraine’s accession would have a number of negative consequences, the initiative aims to give Hungarian citizens the opportunity to express their own opinion. The result of the referendum will guide the government in the debates against Brussels.
