Record-Breaking Summer Peak in Electricity Consumption

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.17.

This Monday, Hungarian Electricity Transmission System Operator Ltd. (MAVIR) announced that both this year’s summer and all-time summer peak system loads were surpassed.

The peak system load reached 6,951 megawatts (MW) between 7:45 p.m and 8:00 p.m. This figure exceeds the previous record of 6,901 MW set on Wednesday, July 10, when the average daily temperature was 30.3 degrees Celsius. The highest summer load ever recorded by MAVIR was 6,940 MW on June 24, 2021, just 11 MW lower than Monday’s peak.

According to the weather forecast, there is a possibility that this peak will be exceeded again later this week, the system operator noted.

During summer heatwaves, peak loads typically occur in the evening when households use lighting, air conditioning, and other electrical appliances.

MAVIR emphasized that for each additional degree Celsius above an average daily temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, the daily system load and peak load can increase by at least 100-200 MW. The Hungarian electricity system has adequate reserve capacity to manage these demands, they assured.

The highest ever load on the Hungarian electricity system occurred on January 22, 2024, reaching 7,441 MW.
