Progress in Diósgyőr Castle’s Reconstruction Efforts

Hungary Today 2024.11.05.

The reconstruction of Diósgyőr Castle (near Miskolc, northern Hungary), built in the 14th century, aims to establish a major tourist attraction of its region. This Gothic-style castle features Provençal and Italianate elements and served as the royal seat for King Louis I.

According to BOON, the extensive reconstruction is being undertaken by a consortium of Épkar Zrt. and FK Raszter Zrt., part of the Modern Cities Program, which seeks to revitalize historical sites and promote tourism.

Currently, significant progress has been reported in various aspects of the construction. The project manager, Zoltán Kolozsvári, alongside chief architect Attila Stupeczky and construction manager Zsolt Vári, indicated that the star vault’s promenade has been successfully installed in the west tower’s elevator staircase tower, with ongoing masonry work. The external kitchen building has seen roofing completion, and the installation of tiles is underway. Additionally, the mechanical work, including laying underfloor heating pipes, is progressing steadily, with upcoming waterproofing works planned.

In terms of developments, both the inner and outer castle structures are receiving attention.

The outer castle’s twin towers are experiencing masonry progress, while the inner castle’s north tower has had the wooden ruins of the dome vault placed, marking the beginning of further masonry work. The inner courtyard cornice stones have also been successfully installed.
