RB Leipzig Gets First Win in Budesliga under Hungarian Coaching

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.07.

RB Leipzig, under new head coach Zsolt Lőw who was appointed last Sunday, got their first win in the 28th round of the German football championship, Bundesliga, with a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The home side, featuring Hungarian national team players Péter Gulácsi and Willi Orbán, went behind early against Hoffenheim but turned the game around in the first half, with their rivals finding themselves a man down at 1-1 in the 28th minute. The advantage was useful for the home team, as they took the lead in the last minutes of the first half (Ridle Baku, 2-1).

It was not easy for either team in the second half. Hoffenheim looked to have equalized thanks to an own goal, but it was disallowed for an offside position. However, as the match drew to a close, Yussuf Poulsen found the net to score RB Leipzig’s third goal.

Both the Hungarian national team goalkeeper Gulácsi and defender Orbán played the whole match.

Lőw made his debut in the German Cup semi-final on Wednesday with a defeat against VfB Stuttgart (3-1). In his first league match on Saturday, however, the 3-1 win proves a clear improvement.

As reported by Hungary Today, the Hungarian coach has been tasked with the job of helping RB Leipzig secure a Champions League qualification, which will require a top-four finish.

He is already one step closer, as fourth-placed Mainz played out a surprise 1-1 draw with top-flight guests Holstein Kiel to leave Leipzig just one point clear of their immediate rivals.

Defending champions and current second-placed Bayer Leverkusen won 1-0 at home to Heidenheim, who are fighting for staying in the league, with an extra-time goal to remain six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
