Rare Bird Species Photographed in Hungary

Hungary Today 2024.07.23.

A new species of rare migratory bird, the Blyth’s reed warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum), has been spotted at a lake in Dávod, on the border of Baranya and Bács-Kiskun counties in southern Hungary, the Baranya county news portal, Bama.hu, writes.

Conservation officer Attila Mórocz reported on the website of the Danube-Drava National Park that a rare bird species was captured and ringed at the Dávod Bird Ringing Station in mid-July.

On the first day of the summer-autumn bird migration research, the old male delighted the experts during the early morning net check. After thorough documentation and the recording of numerous biometric data, it was free to fly again, the national park noted.

According to Attila Mórocz,

the Blyth’s reed warbler is an extremely rare migratory bird in Hungary, and this is only the eighth record of the species in the country.

It nests from Scandinavia and the Baltic States through Russia to central Siberia. It winters in Asia, southern India and Sri Lanka, the conservation officer noted. This bird is named after the British zoologist Edward Blyth. This small migratory bird is found in thickets, often near water, but not in swamps. It lays four to six eggs in a nest in a bush. It is a medium-sized warbler, 12.5-14 cm long. The adult is smooth brown on the back, pale underneath. It can easily be confused with the reed warbler, the marsh warbler, or some of the Hippolais warblers. Like most warblers, it is insectivorous, but will take other small food items, including berries.
