Railway Industry’s Largest International Order Coming from Egypt

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.02.11.

Industrial cooperation worth hundreds of billions of forints is taking place between Hungary and Egypt, as the Hungarian railway vehicle industry has received its largest ever international order from the North African country, which is a great industrial development opportunity for Hungary, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Cairo on Monday.

Following his talks in Egypt, the Minister emphasized that the parties are ready to develop the already strong political, industrial and economic cooperation into a new level of strategic partnership.

“Within the framework of a contract worth €1.1 billion, the railway wagons that will be used for passenger rail transport here, in Egypt, in the future will be manufactured in Dunakeszi, Hungary. In total, 1,350 wagons will be produced,”

he said.

“This used to be a Hungarian-Russian cooperation, but because of the sanctions, it was transformed into a Hungarian-Egyptian cooperation. So far, 1,015 wagons have been delivered and another 335 wagons are being manufactured in Dunakeszi, and by August 2026, there will be 1,350 wagons running on Egyptian railways that were manufactured in Hungary or partly in Hungary,” he added.

Péter Szijjártó pointed out that this is a great industrial development opportunity for our country, as around 900 people are working on the project and more than 450 companies are part of the supply chain.

“If this project of ours is successful, it will open the doors for the Hungarian rail vehicle industry here in Egypt and in Africa.

We are talking about a huge uptake market, a steadily increasing demand and needs, as the African population is growing rapidly”, said the Minister. He added that infrastructure development in many African countries has gained momentum, so new large railway investments are expected, which will provide the Hungarian rail vehicle industry with the opportunity to win new large orders.

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the North African country is a very important partner not only for Hungary, but also for the entire European Union, as it is also thanks to the extremely responsible policy of the Cairo government that some of the threats to the continent have been tackled in recent times. “If Egypt did not pursue such a responsible policy, we would be under much more pressure from illegal migration. We therefore urge the European Union to pay Egypt the €4 billion promised earlier from Brussels as soon as possible, free of any artificial conditions,” the Minister underlined.
