The radar system, with its three-dimensional technology, and currently one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world, has arrived in Veszprém (western Hungary). The same type of system also protects Israeli airspace, which many refer to as the “Iron Dome.” The handover ceremony on Friday afternoon was attended by Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and the CEO of manufacturer Rheinmetall Canada, Pietro Mazzei, as well as all the town and national military officials, vehir.hu reports.

The radar complex is composed of three main modules: the antenna system, the operations control cabin, and the power supply system, which are transported by off-road capable trucks, but can also be easily lifted off them. The three units can be transported separately by road, water, air, or rail. The radar has short deployment and tear-down times, ensuring flexible task execution in constantly changing operational conditions.

Pietro Mazzei, CEO of Rheinmetall Canada, praised the partnership between industry and government as he spoke of the importance of cooperation. He said that in Hungary, they have been able to establish an assembly, integration, and test and inspection base, the results of which are the equipment that has been handed over.

He thanked the Hungarian Defense Forces for not only taking the time to learn the technology, but also for integrating it into their daily operations.

The Minister of Defense said that wars do not happen by themselves in the world, but always as a result of human decisions. “There is a clearly recognizable process: first politicians talk about it, then preparations begin with the supply of equipment and ammunition, and the third step is a process that does not need to be explained, because everyone knows what happens next,” he explained.

According to Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, strength is needed to avoid the catastrophe of war. “This strength can also be seen at the ballot box, when the pro-war politicians are replaced by peace-loving ones,” he said. The Minister added that peace also requires military force to be able to defend ourselves independently of others, especially in our airspace. This is why the upgrading of the Hungarian armed forces started years ago, of which the current 3D radar is an important milestone.

This system has performed excellently in Israel, as the whole world saw when Hamas attacked the Jewish state last year,”

the Minister added.

Interesting features of the system include its ability to determine the 3D coordinates, i.e. position and altitude, of the aerial objects it detects, and the fact that it provides three times the antenna rotation speed of current radars, resulting in three times the data update, which significantly shortens the time needed to detect aerial targets. It can simultaneously detect all types of aircraft, from large, high-speed transport aircraft to medium-sized, low-speed drones, as well as ballistic artillery projectiles.
