Pure “Genius”: Man Tries to Smuggle Six Kilos of Cocaine in Airport Luggage

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.08.11.

Over six kilograms of cocaine were found at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport in the luggage of a Hungarian passenger arriving on a flight from Ecuador to Istanbul to Budapest, the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) told MTI on Monday.

Following a tip-off from the police, customs officers inspected the luggage of a Hungarian passenger, among which they found a dental device being carried as hand luggage, the structure of which aroused suspicion.
The device’s outer casing had been modified, its edges were glued, its fastenings were not original, and it had been reinforced with foreign screws, they explained.

When the multi-layered casing was broken open, a total of 6,540 grams of a substance suspected of being a narcotic—cocaine, according to the drug test—was found inside the device.

The drugs, with a black market value of nearly 200 million forints (EUR 5 million), were seized by the financial police.

NAV staff handed over the passenger, who was reasonably suspected of committing the crime, and the seized drugs to the Airport Police Directorate, which is responsible for the case, according to the statement.
