Rheinmetall is soon to start series production at its Zalaegerszeg (western Hungary) plant, the German defense company announced in a post on social media. The company, a global player, has a thousand links to the Hungarian economy, not only setting up military plants, but also operating in the IT and telecommunications sectors, reports Világgazdaság.
Just a few days ago, they reported on their Instagram page that Hungary’s Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV, a type of armored fighting vehicle that carries infantry into battle and provides direct-fire support) capability will increase after Rheinmetall continues to supply the Hungarian Defense Forces. In this context, it was reported that
series production at the Lynx plant in Zalaegerszeg is about to start, with pre-series production nearing its end.
The short post also revealed exactly how many Lynx are being built for the Hungarian Defense Forces.

Rheinmetall has promised that deliveries will start in 2024.
The procurement of the Lynxes goes back to autumn 2020, when the Ministry of Defense signed a contract with the Germans to supply combat vehicles and related services worth more than €2 billion. The cornerstone of the project was the creation of the infantry fighting vehicle manufacturing plant in Zalaegerszeg with HUF 60 billion (EUR 154.8 million), creating 500 new jobs.
The test track for the combat vehicles was inaugurated on July 15 , 2021, and on September 10, 2021, the topping-out ceremony of the Zalaegerszeg combat vehicle factory was held, meaning that the factory building is now ready for construction. An average of 45-50 combat vehicles per year are expected to be produced at the Zalaegerszeg plant to meet domestic demand. The plant is expected to produce for export as well.
Rheinmetall is also building other bases in Hungary. It was reported in the last few weeks that construction of the ammunition factory in Várpalota (in western Hungary, in Veszprém County) is progressing well: the production building, the warehouses and the supporting structures of the office building have been completed. The joint project of Rheinmetall AG and N7 Holding National Defense Industrial Innovation Ltd. will be operated by the joint venture Rheinmetall Hungary Zrt. Production itself will start in the fourth quarter of 2024.
