Igor Zhovka, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, recently told Radio Free Europe’s Ukrainian website that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was invited to Kiev at the February European Council summit and that they are looking forward to welcoming him. He said that they would like to find a solution to the issues that are causing conflict between the two countries as soon as possible.
The Ukrainian diplomat also said in the interview that Viktor Orbán and Volodymyr Zelensky discussed at the EU summit how to achieve Ukraine’s integration into the European Union. According to him, the Hungarian Prime Minister expressed a “constructive” opinion on this issue.
Igor Zhovka said that the Ukrainian president had already invited Viktor Orbán to Kiev several times to discuss everything, including the issues that concern Hungary. He claimed that the Ukrainian side was ready to present their positions on how to solve various problems.
If the Hungarian Prime Minister’s trip to Ukraine were to materialize, the issue of the series of atrocities against Hungarians in Transcarpathia would probably be discussed.
The government has already appealed to international institutions to protect the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, Ukraine and the matter is urgent, as the new Ukrainian law means that from September, national minority schools will practically cease to exist in the country.
The war-torn country is a frequent destination for world leaders. Even US President Joe Biden has recently arrived in Ukraine on an unannounced visit. According to a statement on the White House website, Biden’s visit to Ukraine comes close to the one-year anniversary of the war and is intended to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, territorial integrity and sovereignty.

During his visit, the US President announced an additional half a billion dollars in aid to Ukraine. The package will include military equipment, including artillery ammunition.
