Debrecen (eastern Hungary) won silver and Zalakaros (western Hungary) gold at the Entente Florale Europe 2024. The award ceremony of one of the most prestigious European competitions in the field of environmental architecture was held on September 7 in Székesfehérvár, Turizmus.com reports.
A total of 11 municipalities from 7 countries took part in this year’s European competition of “floral towns and villages.” In addition to Velenje in Slovenia, Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) in Romania, Vlčany (Farkasd) in Slovakia, Carlow and Ballinahown in Ireland, Meinheim and Höxter in Germany and Písek and Chorušice in the Czech Republic, Hungary was represented by the “Flowery Hungary 2022 Grand Prize” winners Debrecen and Zalakaros.
In the judging process, the jury mainly assessed the municipalities’ activities in green management, climate adaptation, environmental education and public involvement.
The results were announced on September 7 at the Sóstó Stadium in Székesfehérvár (central Hungary). The event was attended by nearly 160 city leaders and green space management professionals from competing municipalities. While the guests discovered Székesfehérvár, that had previously won a gold medal and a special prize for good practice,
the public was able to discover the traditions, attractions and traditional food and drink of the competing municipalities at the Europe Market organized at Sóstó.
Entente Florale Europe has been organized since 1975 to promote European municipalities and to disseminate the principles of livability and sustainability on a broad scale. Hungary was the first Central and Eastern European country to join the competition in 1990, and has since then continued to perform well.
