President Tamás Sulyok delivered a ceremonial speech in Pannonhalma (western Hungary) on Tuesday, emphasizing Hungary’s moral foundation in Christianity and the importance of maintaining a strong moral order.
His visit marked the 800th anniversary of the medieval reconstruction and consecration of the monastery church of Pannonhalma, built in honor of Saint Martin.
The visit began with a Holy Mass celebrating the anniversary of the church, a significant event highlighting the monastery’s enduring role in Hungarian history and the preservation of Christian values. Pannonhalma, which has been a symbol of Hungarian Christianity for centuries, continues to play a vital role in safeguarding the country’s Christian heritage and ensuring that future generations uphold their faith and identity.
During his speech, President Sulyok underscored the significance of Pannonhalma as a place of peace and spirituality. He noted that
Pannonhalma is a place where the language of peace has been spoken for a thousand years,” stressing the importance of dialogue, respect, and human dignity in reducing discord, hatred, and war.
Highlighting the monastery’s resilience, he said, “[…] was born at the same time as the Hungarian state, survived the storms of centuries, and showed that it was built on unshakable, rock-solid foundations.” The President also praised the Benedictine monks, stating that “Pannonhalma’s unique heritage is the Benedictine monks, the faith we strive to follow, prayer, work, moderation, and humility.”
He expressed gratitude on behalf of Hungary for the Benedictine monks’ contributions to the country, particularly their dedication to education, spiritual guidance, and community service.
Tamás Sulyok also highlighted the Benedictine order’s emphasis on discipline, freedom, and clear values, providing a foundation for navigating the complexities of modern life.
Following the speech, a commemorative bronze-patinated non-ferrous metal coin issued by the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) was presented, marking the 800th anniversary of the basilica’s reconstruction and the 10th anniversary of the monastery’s designation as a national memorial site. The event also included the awarding of the Order of Merit of Hungary to Archpriest Cyril T. Hortobágyi for his exemplary service.
