On Thursday, Lorenzo Fontana, the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, visited Hungary, where he was received by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President of the Republic Katalin Novák.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed that “Italy is one of our country’s most important allies, and we consider our cooperation in bilateral relations, in the European Union, and in NATO to be key.” He continued: “Our countries are linked by geographical proximity, historical roots, and common views on ideological and social issues.” The two countries’ economic ties are also expanding spectacularly: in 2022, Italy was Hungary’s fifth largest trading partner, Viktor Orbán added.
We are concerned about the illegal migration pressure on Italy,” he said, stressing that Hungary is also aware of the worsening situation on the Balkan route.
Both countries are committed to stopping illegal migration by strengthening the EU’s external borders and developing more effective return policies, as they discussed during the meeting.
Hungarian Head of State Katalin Novák shared details on their meeting in a social media post.
As she wrote about the meeting with the politician, to whom she referred as an old friend, it is important to have a strong alliance between like-minded nations such as Italy and Hungary. She stressed that “we are fighting for family values today just as we did several years ago.” She added that during the meeting, they also discussed the enlargement of the European Union and the fight against terrorism.
Today, Lorenzo Fontana will be the special guest at the 11th Meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of Southeast European Countries, organized by the Hungarian National Assembly.
