The Ukrainian women’s national handball team thanked President of the Republic Katalin Novák with a signed jersey for the opportunity to play their “home” match of the 2023 World Women’s Handball Championship qualifying tournament in Kisvárda, Hungary, reports Index.
“What a surprise,” Katalin Novák wrote in her latest Twitter post after receiving a signed jersey from the Ukrainian national handball team. She added that this was their way of thanking Hungary for hosting the World Championship qualifying match in Kisvárda, which could not be held in Ukraine because of the war.
What a surprise! I got a signed jersey from the Ukrainian handball team! This is how they thanked #Hungary that the city of Kisvárda hosted a qualifying match of the 2023 Women’s Handball World Championship, which could not be held in Ukraine due to the #war. The president is not the only one to have received a similar token from the Ukrainian women’s handball team. Earlier, the team’s players posed for a photo with jerseys bearing the names of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The photo was also meant to show how grateful they were to be able to play their match in Hungary, in Kisvárda, near the Ukrainian border.
At the beginning of February, the President of the Ukrainian Handball Federation approached Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to help them to get the Ukrainian women’s national team to host Northern Macedonia in a World Cup qualifying match in Hungary.
The request was granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Ukrainians eventually won the match 31-22, advancing with an aggregate score of 55-44.
