Leading Hungarian politicians spoke on the 74th anniversary of the founding of NATO and on the issue of enlargement.

NATO must be united and stronger, but the issues of enlargement need to be discussed, Hungarian President Katalin Novák told Turkish state news television TRT World’s English-language program One on One late on Monday.

Novák was asked about the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. The president stressed that “in these difficult times, we must remain united and show our strength.”

NATO is an important alliance that must be strengthened,”

she underlined.

Following the agreement of both Hungary and Turkey to Finland’s accession to NATO in the last week of March, Novák pointed out that there was a “tough debate” in the Hungarian Parliament on Sweden’s accession to NATO, because of unacceptable statements made by senior Swedish officials about Hungary. These were unfounded, biased statements that even questioned Hungarian democracy, she said.

On his Facebook page, Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hailed NATO on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of its formation. He highlighted NATO’s main task: if any member of the alliance is attacked, the whole alliance will respond.

To do this, he said,

every member state needs a well-equipped, well-trained, and combat-ready force, and Hungary is on the right track.”

“On the organizational side, too, we are doing a lot to ensure that a modern, digital 21st-century military force, based on patriotic, courageous Hungarian youth and our military traditions, is a useful and strong member of NATO as a defense alliance, which can ultimately guarantee the security of the Hungarian people at all times,” he added.
