Hungary is gearing up for a week of wintry weather, with snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures forecast across the country. As Christmas approaches, certain areas may even experience a white Christmas, with snow accumulation likely in the southern and western regions, writes Index.
Monday: Snowfall and Strong Winds
On Monday, overcast skies are dominating, with significant precipitation expected in western Transdanubia. Snowfall in the Mecsek region may exceed 15–20 centimeters, while other areas, including Baranya and Tolna counties, could see 5–10 centimeters of sticky snow. In lower elevations, snow depth may reach 3 centimeters.
The Transdanubian region will experience gusty northerly winds, reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h in some areas, leading to snowdrifts, particularly in the Mecsek hills. Daytime highs are forecast between 1°C and 4°C.
HungaroMet has issued a yellow warning for snowfall in Baranya and Tolna counties, where up to 5 centimeters of snow is expected within 12 hours.

Christmas Eve: Snow Turns to Rain in Some Areas
On Tuesday, cloudy skies will persist, with scattered clear spells in the west during the afternoon. Snowfall is expected initially in eastern Hungary, transitioning to sleet and rain later in the day. Melting snow is likely in lowland areas, but a thin layer of fresh snow could accumulate in some regions. Overnight lows will hover around freezing, while daytime temperatures will range from 1°C to 6°C.
First Day of Christmas: Clearing Skies
On Wednesday, skies will clear from the north and northeast, bringing sunny intervals to most areas. Light snow or sleet may occur in the morning, particularly in the southern Transdanubian region, but precipitation is expected to subside during the day. Temperatures will range from -2°C to +3°C overnight and rise to 2°C–7°C during the day.
Second Day of Christmas and Beyond: A Brighter Outlook
Thursday and Friday will see generally clearer skies with occasional clouds. Winds will remain gusty but begin to moderate. Daytime temperatures will range from 2°C to 8°C, while overnight lows may dip to -4°C or colder in snow-covered, less windy areas.
Saturday will bring a mix of foggy and sunny conditions, with light winds and no significant precipitation. Temperatures will range from -8°C to +5°C, with highs below freezing in foggy areas.
As Hungary embraces this frosty week, the wintry weather sets the stage for a picturesque Christmas season.
Those in affected areas are advised to take precautions against strong winds and icy conditions while enjoying the snowy festivities.
