With Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal and assist, Liverpool won 2-0 away to defending champions Manchester City in the 26th round of the English Premier League on Sunday evening.
The Hungarian national team’s captain has been in superb form in recent weeks and played a key role in the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, first assisting Mohamed Salah, then being helped by the Egyptian star, before Szoboszlai scored the Reds’ second goal.
Szoboszlai gave Egypt’s Mohamed Salah an assist from corner kick in the 11th minute after a low corner kick, before the Hungarian player scored in the 37th minute.
He scored his fourth Premier League goal of the season from 12 meters out after a quick counter-attack.
In the 57th minute, he gave another assist, but this time the video referee ruled that he was in an offside position and Curtis Jones’ goal was disallowed.
City, who were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday, are now 20 points behind Liverpool. Manchester City last beat Liverpool in April 2023, and since then the Reds have won twice with two draws.
“After the game they said our fans were chanting that we were going to win the league, but I was so tired I did not even hear it,” said Szoboszlai.
We have to stay calm and keep going forward because we have another tough game against Newcastle on Wednesday. I hope we can finally get what we want,”
he added.
Premier League leaders Liverpool will next host Newcastle United in the midweek 27th round. Fifth-placed Newcastle are no easy opponents for any team in the field, but a win could mean even a gold medal for Liverpool as Arsenal host the surprise team of the season, third-placed Nottingham.
Sixth-placed Bournemouth, who also have a Hungarian national team player Kerkez Milos, suffered a surprise defeat last weekend, but can improve on their form on Tuesday when they host ninth-placed Brighton.
