Precision and Power: Defense Forces Hold Spectacular Live-firing Exercise

Hungary Today 2024.11.14.

An artillery live-firing exercise called Harci Szellem 2024 (“Battle Spirit 2024”) was held at the Bakonykúti (western Hungary) firing range, the Klapka György 1st Armored Brigade of the Hungarian Defense Forces announced on its social media page. According to the post, Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) self-propelled howitzers were used together with the Gidrán combat vehicles, which is not surprising, as the two vehicles can work most effectively together.

As the brigade commander of the corps explained to Magyar Nemzet,

the PzH self-propelled howitzers provide the firepower and the Gidráns provide the mobility and protection for the platoon commanders, and the division command.

Colonel István Tóth noted that the PzH can use its guns from virtually anywhere and can leave its firing position immediately. The Gidrán is designed to perform the necessary background tasks: intelligence informatics, fire mission planning, and target reconnaissance.

It is a family of vehicles that together with the PzH form a system, one cannot really operate effectively without the other,”

he stressed.

It is worth remembering that on November 5, another fifteen Gidráns arrived at the Tata barracks in northern Hungary, completing the number of units planned for the brigade. The Hungarian Defense Forces has been reinforced with 38 Gidráns of different configurations and ten additional Gidráns of different types for the artillery.

Fact

The Gidrán’s original Turkish name is Ejder, meaning dragon, but the Hungarian Defense Forces named it after the Gidrán, a Hungarian horse breed with a very significant historical background. The development of the Gidrán platform by a new Hungarian joint venture was announced in December 2020. The Hungarian vehicles technically constitute a fourth generation Ejder Yalçin with specific modifications for the Defense Forces, including LED lighting and improved ergonomics.
