Positive Crime and Accident Trends Revealed in Police Statistics

Hungary Today 2024.03.12.

Hungary is one of the twenty safest countries in the world, according to police statistics for the past year, as reported by Duna TV’s criminal news program on Monday evening, writes Mandiner.

Major General Sándor Töreki, Deputy National Police Commissioner for Criminal Affairs, told the program that the number of crimes last year was just over 167,000, which was four percent more than in 2022. “These figures also show that the Hungarian people have experienced stable public safety in the country, and our investigation performance indicators have also improved,” he said.

According to the statistics, investigation efficiency has been around 70 percent for years, but last year it rose by 0.2 percentage points.

He noted that there were 18 fewer homicides last year than a year earlier. On this, Mr. Töreki said the number of homicides “matches the trends of the last five to seven years,” and basically 90 percent of homicides are due to domestic conflict. Last year, all new homicide cases were solved by the police, and in most cases, the perpetrator was caught within a few hours,” the officer stressed.

Regarding personal injury accidents, 393 fewer occurred last year than the year before, an improvement of more than two percent. Major General János Kuczik, Deputy National Police Chief, said the most common causes of accidents continued to be speeding, failure to give way, and breaches of the rules on changing direction and turning.

In addition, intoxicated-driving increases the risk of accidents.

The statistics also show that the number of the most serious fatal accidents fell last year, with 68 fewer deaths on the roads than in 2022, an improvement of more than 12 percent.

Speaking on the program about the police operation to prevent illegal speeding, Major General Kuczik added that they focused in particular on places where drivers of converted vehicles meet up, such as the parking lots of shopping centers, petrol stations, and the roads leading to them, during which more than 50 registration licenses were withdrawn, dozens of vehicles were ordered to undergo an out-of-order technical inspection, and more than 200 drivers were fined.

Last year, 150 portable speed cameras, 134 installed traffic enforcement cameras (traffipaxes), and 87 so-called traffiboxes doubled the number of speed cameras used to detect speeders.

The amount of fines for speeding also increased by 30 percent last year. Kuczik emphasized: in 2023, there will be 47 fewer fatal accidents where the accident was caused by speeding. He also noted that surveys show that only 90 percent of people in the front seat of a car are wearing seat belts, while the rate for rear-seat passengers was 57 percent last year, and only six in ten children were wearing seat belts.
