Popular InterCity Train Begins Summer Service between Budapest and Split

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.06.19.

This year’s first Adria InterCity departed from Budapest to Split on Tuesday evening. Until the second half of August, almost all Adria InterCity trains will have a high occupancy rate, with current rates around 85-90% for couchette cars and 70% for sleeping cars, according to MÁV-Start (Hungarian State Railway).

Since the start of advance ticket sales in spring, passengers have bought 8,300 tickets, more than half of last year’s total of 14,000 tickets. For those planning to travel to the Croatian coast using this service, which runs until September 30, the railway company suggests targeting departure dates after August 20.

In 2022, Lonely Planet selected Adria InterCity as one of the 10 most beautiful train journeys in Europe.

The Adria IC departs from the Keleti Railway Station in Budapest at 6:45 p.m., crosses the southern shore of Lake Balaton, then the border, and descends to the coast after traversing passes 900 meters above sea level in the Dinaric Mountains. It arrives in the center of Split, near the old town and port, at 9:49 a.m. In addition, passengers can board at six other stations in Hungary. Disembarking on the return trip is also available at these stations. The return train from Split departs at 5:54 p.m., arriving in Budapest at 9:35 a.m. the next day.

Passengers traveling in sleeping cars can choose from a variety of breakfast menus, which can be enjoyed in the dining car. Food and drinks are available from the coach attendants throughout the journey. In the dining cars, payment is accepted in forints, euros, credit cards, and all SZÉP cards (the most popular fringe benefit in Hungary). Passengers traveling in Adria InterCity sleeping cars can also use the Premium Lounge at Keleti Station, where they can enjoy free snacks, sandwiches, and soft drinks, as announced by MÁV-Start.
