Pope Francis has recognized Bishop Áron Márton of Alba Iulia (Gyulafehervár, Romania) as having practiced holiness to a heroic degree, granting him the title of Venerable. This marks an important step in his canonization process. The second stage of the process requires proof of a miracle attributed to his intercession before proceeding to beatification.
As Index writes, the canonization process for Bishop Márton began in the early 1990s, and after over three decades, the Vatican has officially acknowledged his path toward sainthood. Gergely Kovács, Archbishop of Alba Iulia, expressed gratitude for the progress:
after 86 years, our archdiocese has again received Bishop Áron as a Christmas gift, albeit in a different form.”
Bishop Áron Márton, who served as Bishop of Gyulafehervár from 1939 to 1980, was known for his courageous stances, including opposing the deportation of Jews during World War II and resisting communist rule. He was arrested in 1949, imprisoned, and later released under international pressure. His legacy of resistance to totalitarian regimes and his defense of religious freedom are central to his veneration.
As the canonization process continues, the Church awaits a verified miracle to move forward with Márton’s beatification.
Archbishop Kovács urged, “let us pray to the Venerable Bishop Áron Márton and ask for a verifiable miracle through his intercession.”
