Poll Indicates RMDSZ at Risk of Not Being Represented in European Parliament Elections

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.30.

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) could be left without representation in this year’s European Parliament elections, according to the latest INSCOP poll published on Tuesday.

The national poll, commissioned by the News.ro portal and conducted between January 16 and 24, showed that 4.8% of respondents with party preferences would vote for the RMDSZ if the EP elections were held next weekend.

The threshold to get in is 5%.

According to the poll, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) would win the EP elections in Romania with 29.5% of the votes, while the other party in the ruling coalition, the National Liberal Party (PNL) led by Senate President Nicolae Ciucă, would receive 18.8%.

In third place, with 18.4% of the votes, the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), a party described as extremist, virtually tied with the PNL. Diana Șoșoacă’s (independent senator) SOS Romania party will also have the opportunity to secure a spot.

The opposition group United Right Alliance (ADU), formed in December by the Save Romania Alliance, the People’s Movement Party (PMP), and the Force of the Right (FD), would get 12.9% of the party preference vote.

More than half of respondents (50.9%) said they were sure to vote in the EP elections, meaning a turnout that could be as high as five years earlier, when 51.7% of eligible voters cast their ballots, indicating a record for EP election turnout.

Commenting on the survey, Remus Stefureac, Director of INSCOP, pointed out that the actual turnout may vary depending on the support for individual parties.

Therefore, besides the responses of the 68.7% of the sample who indicated their party preference, INSCOP also published the distribution of options of the 39.3% of the respondents who indicated their party preference and who promised to vote.

This showed that lower electoral activity would favor the parties of the right and the RMDSZ, with “committed” voters giving the PNL 19.8%, the ADU 18.2%, and the RMDSZ 5.6% (well above the threshold for entry).

At the last EP elections in 2019, the RMDSZ sent two MEPs to the European Parliament, Gyula Winkler and Loránt Vincze, after winning 5.26% of the Romanian votes.

The next EP elections in Romania will be held on June 9, and the country will have 33 seats in the European Union’s body of representatives.
