Zsolt Németh, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, recently shared insights on the complex geopolitical landscape, focusing on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.
The politician expressed deep concern about the prolonged Russian-Ukrainian war that started in February 2022. He highlighted the escalating death toll, reaching hundreds of thousands, which is unprecedented in the post-World War II era. Additionally, he pointed out the impact of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel in October, likening it to historical atrocities against Jews.
In his assessment of global politics, he emphasized the need for careful consideration not only of traditional wars, but also of emerging security challenges, including cyber warfare and various forms of hybrid conflicts.
He underscored the significant role played by national, inter-ethnic, and inter-religious conflicts in the current tumultuous global scenario.
When discussing the possibility of Ukraine’s EU accession, the chairman acknowledged ongoing discussions and symbolically granted candidate status to Ukraine as a gesture of solidarity. However,
he highlighted the need for a rational dialogue considering contentious issues, such as the legal status of Hungarian minorities in Transcarpathia.
The politician recognized Ukraine’s desire to align with the Western world, signaling a departure from the concept of being a buffer country between Hungary and the rest of Europe, and Russia. He called for a realistic approach to Ukraine’s EU integration, emphasizing transparency and predictability in the accession process.
In bilateral relations between Hungary and Ukraine, Mr. Németh lamented the lack of honest and meaningful dialogue despite high-profile meetings between both Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Head of State Katalin Novák with President Zelensky.
Regarding Hungary’s approach to Russia, he highlighted the government’s attempt to maintain a dialogue while cautioning the EU and international actors against neglecting Russia. He pointed out Hungary’s inherent economic interests and stressed the need for a balanced approach to foster peace and stability.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, Mr. Németh urged diplomatic solutions and strategic partnerships to navigate complex challenges and work towards a more peaceful and stable future.
