PM’s Political Director Urges EU Reforms Amid Conservative Shift

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.06.28.

During the EU summit in Brussels, Balázs Orbán, the political director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has highlighted a significant shift in European politics following recent elections, which he believes have leaned towards conservative preferences.

This interpretation contrasts sharply with the views held by the current Brussels’ leadership, whom Mr. Orbán accuses of misunderstanding the electorate’s sentiments. He asserted that Hungary will play a pivotal role in forming a coalition aimed at ushering in change within the EU, criticizing current policies as inadequate and insisting on the necessity for a new direction.

Balázs Orbán emphasized the urgency of uniting right-wing, sovereigntist, and patriotic forces across Europe to consolidate their influence in Brussels effectively.

He pledged forthcoming initiatives to solidify this coalition, aiming to better reflect what he perceives as the true will of European voters.

Balázs Orbán posted the following on his social media page:

“what we are witnessing now is that in the “capital” of Europe, a pact has already been forged between the People’s Party, the Socialists, and the Liberals. This development is very detrimental for Europe: in Brussels, the pro-war EU coalition of the last two years is being reaffirmed. This coalition is incapable of representing the interests of the European people and completely misinterprets the results of the elections at the beginning of June, where, precisely due to failed policies, the majority of Europeans voted for change.

The Hungarian stance, however, remains unchanged: we voted for peace on June 9, and that is the only thing we can support now!”

Regarding recent coalition-building efforts among the European People’s Party (EPP), Socialists, and Liberals to nominate EU leadership, the PM’s political director sharply criticized this alliance as a “pro-war coalition.” He accused it of disregarding the electorate’s desire for substantive change and pledged Hungary’s opposition to Ursula von der Leyen’s nomination for Commission President, framing the vote as a litmus test for those either supporting left-leaning alliances or advocating for a right-wing agenda.

Mr. Orbán further criticized the EU bureaucracy for its alleged inability to represent the interests of European citizens adequately.

He argued that the current structure exacerbates a democratic deficit within the EU, citing concerns over its decision-making processes and policies on critical issues such as war, sanctions, competitiveness, foreign policy, and migration. He warned that unless reforms are undertaken, dissatisfaction among European voters will likely continue to grow.

Looking ahead to Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency, Balázs Orbán announced a key initiative to normalize the scheduling of EU leaders’ meetings, aiming for more practical and accessible timing. This proposal reflects broader discontent with EU governance practices, underlining Hungary’s stance on the need for fundamental reforms to enhance transparency and responsiveness within the European Union.
