The Political Director of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reacted in a social media post to the victory of conservative forces in the parliamentary elections in Portugal. Balázs Orbán welcomed the result, calling it a win for the “silent majority.”
“The #Portuguese, who are dissatisfied with the political system that has been in place for fifty years, see in us the possibility of a radical change to the existing paradigm. They are supporting us in this fight. We have come to give voice to the silent majority, to those who gave up on fighting against the system until we came along,” he wrote. “And he not only said it, he did it! Congrats André Ventura,” concluded Balázs Orbán in his tweet.

The center-right Democratic Alliance has won the most votes in Portugal’s early elections this weekend. The result was close, with no party securing an absolute majority. Despite a campaign of intimidation and violence against its candidates and campaigners, Chega and its conservative allies managed to win at least 79 seats in total, while the Socialist Party won 77. Pedro Nuno Santos, leader of the Socialists, conceded defeat for his party. Conservative nationalists Chega came out of the election third, with at least 48 seats in Portugal’s 230-member parliament (only 12 seats in 2022).

However, it is doubtful that Portugal will have a right-wing government, as Democratic Alliance leader Luís Montenegro has ruled out any coalition agreement with Chega. Antonio Costa ‘s left-wing government was forced to resign after authorities detained his chief of staff on suspicion of corruption and searched several public institutions.
