In a recent interview on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed several pressing economic and geopolitical issues, emphasizing the impact of the ongoing war on Hungary’s economy and the need for a change in EU policies. He also discussed the government’s economic strategy and social programs aimed at improving citizens’ living standards.
War’s Economic Toll
According to Magyar Nemzet, Mr. Orbán highlighted the negative effects of EU sanctions, stating that “the EU sanctions were a mistake, as they led to a rise in energy prices, which in turn caused inflation.”
He stressed that the war has severely impacted Hungary’s economy, with rising energy costs and inflation being major challenges.
“We need to end the war, or the vitality will not return to the economy,” he added.
Pro-Peace Stance and Political Changes
The Prime Minister expressed support for the pro-peace movement, noting that with the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Hungary hopes for a more favorable peace process. “What could be achieved has been achieved, but we needed a protagonist strong enough to bring about peace,” he said. He also indicated that the next few years could bring unprecedented changes to Hungary.
Economic Strategy and Social Support
He discussed the government’s budget plans, including the doubling of family tax credits and housing subsidies for young people.
We are ending the groaning era,” he said, pointing to these programs as essential to boosting the economy.
He also emphasized the importance of small businesses, such as those supported by the Demján Sándor Program, in creating economic growth.
Energy Prices and EU Reform
Viktor Orbán criticized the EU’s current economic strategies, especially in terms of energy prices. “Energy prices must be reduced, which means revising sanctions,” he said, calling for a reduction in bureaucracy in Europe. He also noted,
our budget is an open rebellion, in stark contrast to what Brussels thinks.”
The Prime Minister’s interview highlighted Hungary’s critical position in the ongoing economic and political challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace, economic growth, and a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving the quality of life for Hungarians. With peace and reforms, he believes Hungary can overcome current difficulties and ensure a brighter future.
