L-R: Irakli Kobakhidze and Viktor Orbán

Following yesterday’s summit between the Hungarian and Georgian governments, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia, held a joint press conference.

As PM Orbán explained at the press conference, everyone “envies” Georgia, pointing to its seven percent economic growth, declining national debt, controlled deficit, and equally good prospects for next year. He stressed, however, that Georgia was also under attack from Brussels due to its pro-peace stance, and the fact that it did not want to be involved in a war, stood up for its sovereignty, and proudly said that its own country came first.

Hungary is committed to Georgia’s sovereignty, not only in bilateral relations but also at the European level,”

said Viktor Orbán, adding that regardless of Brussels’s opinion, it had been agreed that Georgia would receive every assistance on its path to EU membership. From September, Hungary will train 50 Georgian officials and even send government experts to Georgia, he announced.

With regard to economic relations between the two countries, he recalled that Wizz Air is the market leader in Georgia and that trade between Hungary and Georgia has reached a record level. For the first time, the $100 million (€86 million) mark has been exceeded, with pharmaceutical products accounting for the majority of Hungarian exports to Georgia, PM Orbán emphasized.

The working committees also discussed cooperation in the energy sector.

The joint energy program, in which five countries are participating, aims to import green electricity generated in the Caucasus to Hungary and the EU,”

Orbán announced.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists that Hungary was Georgia’s strongest supporter of European integration, even though Georgia had encountered artificial obstacles on its path to the European Union. He emphasized the importance of the summit meeting between the two countries, which will further strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of energy, economic development, environmental protection, the justice and education systems, and culture.

He thanked Hungary for its support for Georgia’s integration into the European Union and added that his country wanted to become a member of the European Union by 2030, and had already fulfilled 90 percent of its commitments.

Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky wrote in a Facebook post after the government meeting that agreements on enhanced cooperation had also been signed in the areas of defense and sports.

Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó made it clear after the joint government talks that the South Caucasian country was the best example of Brussels’ double standards and hypocrisy. “When a patriotic, peace-loving, family-friendly government wins an election, they immediately see the end of the world or at least the end of democracy, while when a liberal, war-mongering, gender propaganda party wins an election, they say that democracy is in its best shape ever,” the Minister said, emphasizing that Hungary would continue to maintain a peaceful stance.

We are protecting our children and ourselves, we are also protecting our sovereign right that only Hungarians can decide what the future of Hungary should look like,”

the Minister said, adding that Hungary would stand by its Georgian friends in their fight for sovereignty.
