Hungary Today 2024.09.13.

In a recent radio interview, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán outlined his vision for Hungary’s future, focusing on the country’s economic potential, strategic positioning within the EU, and the need for effective border protection, reports Magyar Nemzet.

The Prime Minister discussed anticipated high economic growth, the concept of economic neutrality, and the importance of addressing wage levels and global competitiveness challenges. His remarks paint a picture of a nation on the brink of economic advancement while grappling with both internal and external pressures.

Recovery and Growth

Mr. Orbán highlighted that Hungary’s economy is nearing recovery, citing favorable indicators such as low inflation and strong investment rates. He expressed optimism about Hungary’s economic trajectory, noting, “the Hungarian economy is on the threshold of recovery.”

The Prime Minister also introduced the notion of economic neutrality, advocating for its adoption to better serve Hungary’s interests in a shifting global landscape.

He remarked, “it is time to introduce it and use it in economic terms,” underscoring the need for strategic economic policies that align with Hungary’s unique position and challenges.

Wage Increases and Competitiveness

On the topic of wage policy, Viktor Orbán discussed plans to significantly raise minimum wages and implement a new workers’ loan scheme aimed at supporting young workers. He stressed the importance of negotiating reasonable wage increases to prevent redundancies, saying,

the best thing is for workers and employers to agree on how much the pay rise should be.”

Additionally, Mr. Orbán raised concerns about the EU’s competitiveness, referencing a report by former ECB President Mario Draghi. He emphasized that Hungary must compete globally rather than block external forces, asserting, “Hungary must compete, and it is good if the world economy is united.”

Border Protection

Regarding border protection, the PM reiterated Hungary’s longstanding position on defending EU external borders and criticized the EU for not adequately compensating the country for its efforts. He strongly declared,

Hungary belongs to the Hungarians. Period. This is only possible if we protect our borders,”

emphasizing his commitment to national sovereignty and effective border control. Viktor Orbán’s stance reflects a broader concern about maintaining Hungary’s identity and security in the face of broader migration challenges.

Prime Minister Orbán’s interview reflects his strategic vision for Hungary’s future. Looking ahead, Viktor Orbán’s plans aim to position Hungary prominently within Europe’s economic landscape, with a focus on maintaining competitive and secure national policies. His approach signals a proactive stance on navigating global and regional challenges, positioning Hungary for significant growth and stability in the coming years.
