The 2024 US presidential election is drawing to a close with high turnout and crucial results from battleground states tipping the scales. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are the major candidates vying for the presidency.
The candidates are aiming to secure at least 270 out of the 538 electoral votes to win. The battleground states have seen high voter engagement, reflecting deep interest and division among the electorate, with early results showing a close race. Now though, during a press conference, surrounded by his family and in the presence of his Vice-President Elect, J.D. Vance, Donald Trump has declared himself the winner. If these results are confirmed, he would be the USA’s 45th and 47th President.
Fox News and other networks reported that Trump may have already crossed the 270-vote threshold, predicting him to have at least 277 electoral votes compared to Harris’s 226.
Alongside these presidential results, Republicans appear poised to secure a majority in the Senate, flipping at least two seats from the Democrats.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán commented on the results on social media, calling this potential victory for Trump “the greatest comeback in western political history.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, expressed optimism for improved Hungarian-American relations following the U.S. election. In a Facebook post, he noted:
politics is an art of experience. During Donald Trump’s first presidency, Hungarian-American political relations were at their peak, and dialogue and negotiations were at the forefront in resolving conflicts that threaten world security.”
Minister Szijjártó believes shared views on peace, immigration, and family protection can lead to renewed cooperation, with hopes for peace in Ukraine.

European Union support for U.S. political figures is split, with countries showing varying preferences toward Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. As POLITICO reports, some EU officials believe a second Trump term could force Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities and challenge China’s influence.
This viewpoint is especially common in countries with conservative or hawkish stances, like Poland and Hungary, where Trump’s approach resonates more.
In contrast, Democrats and Kamala Harris tend to enjoy more popularity in Western and Northern Europe, particularly in countries like Germany and France, which favor stronger international alliances and climate action. Research shows that within the EU, the Nordic states were the most enthusiastic about a Kamala Harris victory with Denmark in the lead, while Hungary had the strongest support within the bloc, with 62% of people saying they rooted for Donald Trump. In Europe, only three countries outside the EU showed more support for Donald Trump: Georgia, Serbia, and Russia.
Only Eastern Europe would vote for Donald Trump if the election was held there.
In Denmark, 96% would vote for Kamala.

Representatives of the Hungarian governing conservatives have expressed unapologetic support for Donald Trump in recent months, with PM Viktor Orbán even meeting the current president elect in the USA. Among many reasons for this attitude is the Hungarian Government’s hope that a Trump presidency would start engaging in peace talks in Ukraine, a conflict that is heavily weighing on the Hungarian economy and is causing strong security concerns.
