Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on key issues such as energy security, the war in Ukraine, and stability in Syria. PM Orbán and President Putin shared a commitment to maintaining energy cooperation despite the challenges posed by international sanctions.
In the over one-hour-long call, Mr. Orbán and Mr. Putin emphasized the importance of continuing energy cooperation, with no obstacles from either side preventing a resolution. “We are committed, and we have a shared will to continue energy cooperation. There is no factor on either side—on the Hungarian or the Russian side—that would prevent us from finding a solution to this situation,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said.
Hungary has maintained a pro-peace stance on Ukraine, advocating for diplomatic channels and open communication.
Hungary has been taking the same committed pro-peace stance for a thousand days,” Szijjártó stated. Orbán discussed potential peace-building efforts with Putin, with the Russian President noting that Ukraine’s laws currently hinder negotiations for peace.
Hungary also continues to focus on stability in Syria and providing humanitarian support to Christian communities in the Middle East. Szijjártó highlighted, “We Hungarians are particularly attentive to the situation of Christian communities and will continue to provide them with the necessary humanitarian support.”
The U.S. sanctions on Gazprombank have created financial difficulties for Hungary and other countries in Central and southeastern Europe, especially concerning payments for natural gas and nuclear fuel.
“By placing Russia’s Gazprombank on the sanctions list, the current U.S. administration has created serious difficulties for some Central and southeastern European countries,” Minister Szijjártó said.
Despite these challenges, Viktor Orbán and Vladimir Putin are focused on resolving financial issues to ensure Hungary’s energy security. Hungary’s diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region remain strong, with PM Orbán’s ongoing commitment to dialogue and resolution.
