Hungarian President, Katalin Novák, visited Berlin on Saturday to attend the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Summer Games in the German capital, reported MTI.
The Hungarian national team, consisting of 77 athletes, was led by the head of state at the opening ceremony in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening. Katalin Novák is the first president to accompany the Hungarian Special Olympics team to the competitions.
As the first program of her visit, the head of state opened a new exhibition at the Hungarian Embassy next to the Brandenburg Gate, depicting the history of the initiative through the works of photographers György Soós and Wei Xiang, a Chinese living in Hungary and one of the biggest supporters of the Hungarian Special Olympics Association (MSOSZ) since 1989.
The Hungarian President announced on her Twitter page on Sunday that she had met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

According to her account, she had a meaningful conversation with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. The meeting with Frank-Walter Steinmeier was about strengthening cooperation between the two countries. During the exchange of views, the two leaders agreed that they could do a lot to promote good relations between their countries. Germany is one of Hungary’s most important allies, according to a statement from the Sándor Palace.
Novák also posed for a photo with two-time Olympic champion and legendary German figure skater Katharina Witt at the Olympic Stadium.
Nearly seven thousand athletes from almost 200 countries are taking part in the 16th Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin. At the event, which runs through June 25, participants will compete in 26 sports, with the 77-member Hungarian team competing in 15 disciplines.
