Photo Exhibition about Eastern European Life Opens

Hungary Today 2025.02.13.

The exhibition titled Europe – From an Eastern European Perspective is opening on Thursday at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest. The gallery tells a story about Eastern European life through the works of Polish and Hungarian photographers, says Turizmus.

The exhibition takes place in the context of Hungary and Poland’s presidency of the European Union in the recent year. The spectacle features 12 artists, six Hungarian and six Polish, said István Virágvölgyi, the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center’s professional director at the exhibition’s press launch.

The curators have created six sections, each featuring the works of a Hungarian and a Polish photographer, which explore the concept of Eastern Europeanism with positive content. According to István Virágvölgyi, the common history of the region, resulting from geographical proximity, has made the locals similar. Their way of life and strategies are therefore alike. There is much common ground in the work of contemporary artists, similar mindsets come together in the exhibition, which will be on view until March 30th.

István Virágvölgyi also spoke about that the next issue of the prestigious international journal of picturing,

the British Journal of Photography, will feature a 50-page review on the project at the Capa Center and the photographic scene in Hungary and Poland.

The new issue will be launched on March 28 at the Capa Center. The Budapest Portfolio Review day will be organized on March 28 and 29. Meanwhile an international conference on Europe – Eastern European Perspective will be held on March 27th at the Polish Institute in Budapest with the participation of curators and photography professionals.

Emese Mucsi, the Hungarian curator of the exhibition, added that a satellite exhibition will be held in the Polish Institute in Budapest in connection with the exhibition “Europe – from an Eastern European perspective,” where a solo exhibition will open on March 27th on the works of Ukrainian artist Lia Dostlieva, who lives in Poland.

Polish curator Wiktoria Michalkiewicz said: “The joint Hungarian-Polish project at the Capa Center aims to showcase the common language of Eastern European artists. The goal is to strengthen the sense of belonging and to help artists from the region to gain international recognition. The artists will address themes and issues that surround them, including their own Eastern European identity.
