Phone Tariffs to Follow Steep Inflation Curb

Dániel Deme 2023.01.18.

This year Magyar Telekom and Vodafone are both implementing inflation-linked tariff increases. Magyar Telekom told MTI that due to inflationary pressure and a sharp increase in energy prices and supplier costs, it will implement an inflation-linked tariff adjustment of 14.5 percent from 1 March 2023. The first increased bill will be sent to business fixed line customers in March and to residential fixed line, residential mobile and business mobile subscribers in April.

Magyar Telekom will adjust the monthly fees for the services and tariff packages included in the GTCs and in the subscriber contracts within 90 days of the official publication of the annual average consumer price index, while the traffic-type fees will remain unchanged. Magyar Telekom will inform customers of the amount of the inflation-based tariff adjustment in the bill supplement to be sent in February 2023.

Vodafone said that it has not increased prices for several years, but changes in the economic environment in recent years have made it necessary to introduce an automatic inflation-linked tariff adjustment from January 2023. They added that the telecoms industry had already taken on an extraordinary burden during the Covid epidemic, including the provision of teleworking and distance learning, and that this had been compounded by additional economic challenges in recent years.

In their view,

these circumstances have combined to justify the introduction of an automatic inflation-linked tariff adjustment, the level of which has been set by the operators in consultation with the Authority on the basis of official inflation data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

In the case of Vodafone, the rate is 9.39 percent, based on inflation for the annual period from August 2021 to August 2022, they said.

DIGI Távközlési és Szolgáltató Kft (DIGI) and Invitel Zrt, which is being merged into the company, will adjust the list prices of their fixed line and satellite services from 1 January 2023. The price changes will affect all cable TV, internet and fixed telephony services of DIGI and Invitel, as well as DIGI’s satellite services. Exceptions to this are customers with a fixed loyalty period contract, for whom DIGI will provide their services at the same price until the end of the committed loyalty period, they said.
In response to a request from MTI, Yettel said that from this year, prices will be changed once a year in line with the annual average consumer price index of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). The increase will apply to both existing and new customers.

The rate of the tariff adjustment is expected to be 14.5 percent this year, in line with the KSH’s flash report for calendar year 2023. The price indexation is automatic, fully in line with inflation as published by the HCSO and does not constitute a unilateral contract amendment, they added.
