It has been announced how fuel prices will change in Hungary from mid-week. The double trend on the Hungarian fuel market continues, reports Világgazdaság according to a recent data release from Holtankoljak.hu.

Based on details from the fuel price watchdog, the purchase price of petrol will fall from Wednesday, while that of diesel will remain unchanged. What will happen is that from mid-week,

the wholesale price of petrol will fall by HUF 3 (1 EUR = 395.59 HUF) gross,

which is expected to be reflected in prices at the pump. The average prices from mid-week on March 13 will therefore be as follows:

  • 95 petrol – HUF 619 per liter (EUR 1.56)
  • diesel – HUF 641 Ft per liter (EUR 1.62).

It is important to stress that these are average prices, from which actual retail prices may differ by HUF  4-5. Near motorways, fuel is roughly HUF 50 more expensive per liter. In any case, so far this year, at wholesale level,

the price of petrol has risen by HUF 77 per liter and the price of diesel by HUF 68,

although HUF 41 of this is due to the mandatory increase in excise duty in January. Excluding this, there is an increase of HUF 36 and HUF 27 for petrol and diesel respectively. The increase of around HUF 70 per liter means that an average 50-liter tank of petrol costs between HUF 3,500 and HUF 4,000 more now than it did in December last year.

Last week, the price of Brent oil was essentially stable, ranging between USD 81 and USD 83 per barrel. The current price is USD 82.05. As for the forint against the dollar, we have not seen huge swings this week either, with the forint strengthening from HUF 363 on Monday to HUF 360 on Sunday. Therefore, it was expected that fuel prices would be subject to minor corrections this week. This has so far proved to be the case. The next update on the prices that wholesalers will be setting for petrol stations from Friday will be on Wednesday.

A comparison of prices with Hungary’s neighbors shows a mixed picture. Prices are higher in Austria (petrol: EUR 1.597; diesel: EUR 1.69), and Serbia (EUR 1.579; EUR 1.741). They are lower in Romania (EUR 1.441; EUR 1.518), Slovenia (EUR 1.491; EUR 1.523), and Ukraine (EUR 1.294; EUR 1.3). In Croatia (EUR 1.517; EUR 1.653), motorists can get cheaper 95 petrol but more expensive diesel and in Slovakia (EUR 1.624; EUR 1.612) the situation is similar to Croatia, but diesel is only slightly cheaper than in Hungary.
