The 35-year-old RB Leipzig goalkeeper announced his decision to retire on social media on Monday. “Every national team player reaches a point in their career when they have to make a difficult decision. After much thought, I have decided to end my career as goalkeeper for the Hungarian national team,” he said.
He added that it had been a huge privilege and honor to represent his country 58 times at the highest level over the past 11 years, but with the end of the Nations League, this extremely important journey has also come to an end. “I am filled with pride when I think back on the unforgettable moments, the exciting matches, the victories we experienced together, but also the difficult moments we went through together as a team,” he said.
As he recalled, he played in the national team jersey for 15 years, defending the U16 team, then reaching the semifinals of the U19 European Championship, winning a bronze medal at the U20 World Championship, and serving as captain of the U21 team for several years.
I was able to participate in three European Championships with the senior national team, playing in two of them, including one at home in front of a sold-out crowd at Puskás Arena. These memories will always hold a special place in my heart,”
said Gulácsi.

Péter Gulácsi made his debut for the senior national team on May 22, 2014, in a friendly match against Denmark, which ended in a 2-2 draw, Nemzeti Sport recalled. He has been RB Leipzig’s first-choice goalkeeper since the club was promoted to the top flight, starting more than 200 games for the team. His best season was 2018/19, when he was voted the best player in the Bundesliga.
He suffered a serious setback in October 2022, when he tore his cruciate ligament and suffered complications from an infection following surgery. His career was in jeopardy, but he eventually recovered by the fall of 2023, only to return to the starting lineup for Leipzig in February 2024.
He won silver and bronze medals in the Bundesliga with his club, making him a regular participant in the Champions League, and his two greatest successes were winning the German Cup in 2022 and 2023.
He was already a member of the national team’s European Championship squad in 2016, but did not play at the time. He started the last two European Championship group matches for the national team.
He has made 58 appearances for the senior national team, most recently in the Nations League on September 7.
