Péter Gulácsi Named Bundesliga’s Best Goalkeeper This Autumn

Péter Gulácsi, the Hungarian goalkeeper for RB Leipzig, has been recognized as the best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga this autumn, according to the renowned German sports magazine Kicker.

Gulácsi earned the prestigious “international class” rating, the highest given this season as no goalkeeper achieved the elusive “world class” designation, writes Nemzeti Sport. He outperformed Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim) and Robin Zentner (Mainz), who took second and third places, respectively.

The ranking comes as no surprise given Gulácsi’s stellar performances throughout the season.

He was named in Kicker’s team of the round four times, more than any other goalkeeper.

Additionally, he holds the league’s best record for clean sheets, with eight games without conceding a goal.

Statistically, Gulácsi ranks among the Bundesliga’s top defenders, with a save efficiency of 72.5%. This places him just behind Nicolas Moritz of Borussia Mönchengladbach (75.9%) and Kevin Trapp of Eintracht Frankfurt (75.4%).

Kicker praised Gulácsi’s consistency,

noting that while he had a few subpar performances, such as during the Champions League clash against Aston Villa and the Nations League match against Germany,

his overall form has been crucial for RB Leipzig’s defense, which has struggled at times this season.

The recognition cements Gulácsi’s status as one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers and highlights his vital role in RB Leipzig’s campaign. As the league heads into the winter break, Gulácsi’s performances have set a high bar for the remainder of the season.

Fact

Péter Gulácsi began his career at Budapesti Honvéd and MTK Budapest before joining Liverpool’s youth academy in 2007. Although he did not play for Liverpool’s first team, loan spells at Hereford United, Tranmere Rovers, and Hull City helped him gain valuable experience. After moving to Red Bull Salzburg, he transitioned to RB Leipzig in 2015, where he became the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Gulácsi has been instrumental in Leipzig’s success, including reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2020.
