Pécs Hosts Museum Street Plus Festival with Historic Parades and Workshops

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.15.

The Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs (Southern Hungary) will host the Museum Street Plus festival over the August 20 national holiday’s weekend (August 16-18), featuring a range of historical and artistic programs.

The three-day, free event kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. with a historical parade called Cross and Crescent in Széchenyi Square (main square of the city), highlighting the 14th-16th centuries. The Keleti Szél Band will lead the procession with Hungarian medieval music and perform at the Historical Courtyard on Káptalan Street.

Traditionalists from across the country will display medieval costumes, weapons, and everyday tools in a period camp.

On Saturday, a round-table discussion will focus on recent research about the battlefield of Mohács (the Ottoman army fatally defeated the Hungarians there in 1526). Attendees can engage in various creative workshops such as silk painting, tile painting, and community cobblestone painting. Themed guided tours will cover topics such as the history of the street, Zsolnay factory’s works inspired by the ancient Egypt or the works of Victor Vasarely and his spouse.

Children’s activities include a music workshop, paper theater, archaeological workshops, and a puppet show by KL Theater featuring music by Psycho Mutans.

The festival will also present the summer double issue of Jelenkor magazine and offer a preview of Gábor Németh’s new novel. A special evening dedicated to poet János Pilinszky will celebrate the iconic Street by Erzsébet Schaár, and Pécs’s forty-five years of cartoons and animation will be honored with garden cinema projections at the Vasarely Museum.

Additionally, the Bishop’s Treasury will be open to the public free of charge throughout the festival.
