“We are strengthening the Hungarian Defense Forces and the Hungarian defense industry,” Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in Abu Dhabi, following a meeting with a defense industrial company in the United Arab Emirates. Following the meeting, the Minister signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with EDGE Group in the field of innovation and research and development.

As reported by Hungary Today, on Wednesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held bilateral talks in the Middle Eastern country. The Hungarian delegation also included Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of Defense, who said in a statement that

EDGE Group in the Emirates has a number of advanced defense solutions that can contribute to Hungary’s strategic objectives and defense needs.

The politician pointed out that the LoI just signed has strengthened bilateral relations and enhanced cooperation in the field of defense innovation and research and development. He underlined that the deepening of relations with the UAE, one of the leading economic and military powers in the Gulf region, will contribute to the strengthening of the Hungarian Defense Forces.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky recalled that in April 2024, he discussed military and defense industrial cooperation opportunities with Mohamed Fadhel Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Defense Affairs in the UAE. “We are now strengthening this cooperation with EDGE Group, one of the world’s leading defense companies,” said the Hungarian politician.

The ministry also informed the media that

a contract had been signed with the Emirati company for the purchase of new CARACAL sniper rifles.

According to the statement, the defense minister said that the UAE has been playing an increasingly active role in international military and security cooperation in recent years, including in the Sahel region. “The UAE, like Hungary, values the importance of stability in the region and aims to support local governments in the fight against terrorism and other security challenges,” wrote the ministry.
