Parliament Elects New Head of State

Hungary Today 2024.02.26.

Hungary is a strong and stable country, and the change of leader must be resolved in such a way that there is not even a temporary disruption in the life of the country, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in Parliament on Monday.
Viktor Orbán emphasized that they can fulfill this duty if the new President is elected without delay. He thanked the Fidesz and KDNP parliamentary groups for acting in this spirit and “once again showing that they are worthy of the voters’ trust”. He also thanked Tamás Sulyok, the current president of the Constitutional Court, for accepting the invitation to replace outgoing President Katalin Novák, and asked MPs to support him.

He described Tamás Sulyok as “a man of enormous experience, respectable knowledge and undisputed authority”, stressing that the Constitutional Court’s decisions on the most important issues had shown a clear path in recent years and that these decisions had met with the agreement of both lawyers and the people. “I believe that Hungary needs such a president now”, Prime Minister Orbán added.

Parliament then elected Tamás Sulyok by secret ballot as President of the Republic. 147 members of parliament took part in the vote. 134 of them voted in favor of the Constitutional Court president. Following the announcement of his election by the Speaker, Tamás Sulyok took the oath of office as Head of State.

Tamás Sulyok will take office on 5 March, becoming the seventh President of the Republic since the change of regime in 1989.

The election of the new president follows the resignation of Katalin Novák earlier this month. The former president had said goodbye to Hungarians with a touching video on her social media account.
