The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority has approved the preliminary safety report for the so-called first concrete pour for the Paks nuclear power plant project, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced.

The minister stressed that the step approved by the competent authority is one of the most important milestones in the construction of a nuclear facility. “For the preparation of the preliminary safety report, it was necessary to build the diaphragm wall and to collect the experience gained so far in the soil stabilization process,” he added.

“It is a substantial document, half a million pages in total. And, according to the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, this license also means that

once the first concrete has been poured, this nuclear power plant will be officially classified as a nuclear installation under construction,”

he noted. He underlined that the first concrete could be poured early next year.

Mr. Szijjártó said that

the Paks expansion is currently the largest nuclear project in the EU with a construction license.

“Thousands of people are already working on the site. The excavation of soil to a depth of 23 meters is underway, and 39,000 of the 75,000 piles needed to be driven into the ground during the consolidation of the soil, meaning more than half, are already in the ground,” he noted.
