Mayor Zoltán Soós told Radio Târgu Mures that he has consulted with hunting companies about the big wild animals in the area of the zoo. The town, which has a significant Hungarian population, has seen a mother bear with two cubs roaming around since February, with one of the cubs captured and relocated a month ago. Since then, a fourth animal has been appearing regularly after sunset around running trails around green areas.
The hunting associations said that there are 30-40 bears in the metropolitan area of Târgu Mures, and big wild animals in the forests of Band (Mezőbánd), Miercurea Nirajului (Nyárádszereda), and Acățari (Ákos falva).
We will keep the bears captive in vain, if the municipalities do not do the same, new ones will come and new ones will replace them,”
said Zoltán Soós in response.
According to the RMDSZ mayor, the bear issue should be solved by the Romanian government, which should keep the bear population under control.
According to the Agerpres news agency, on Wednesday, a man picking mushrooms in the village of Oituz (Gorzafalva) in Bacău county was attacked by a bear; the 69-year-old victim suffered minor injuries, the animal just scared him and then left.
Brown bears have also been seen in several Transylvanian towns in recent days, with authorities in Toplița (Maroshévíz), Harghita County, issuing daily bear alerts this week, according to Radio Marosvásárhely.
On Thursday, the office of the mayor in Sibiu said that a bear had been roaming in two residential areas of the city and around the airport last night, for the second day in a row. Authorities, the head of the hunting company, and a veterinarian went to the scene, but were unable to capture the big animal until the afternoon.
Last Friday, a brown bear was also spotted near Oradea (Nagyvárad), and according to Ebihoreanul news portal, the protected animal was seen in the woods near the city, a male of three to four years old. There have never been any similar sightings in the area of the town.
In April, Romanian Environment Minister Barna Tánczos presented the results of a survey of the bear population in Romania, which
estimated the number of wild brown bears in the country at between 7,536 and 8,093, with an average of 11 bears per 100 square kilometers of suitable habitat.
In some areas, bear population densities are much higher. This is why prevention measures are being tightened; for example, this year, 426 protected animals are allowed to be shot, three times the quota of last year.
