Thousands Enrolled in the Free Commercial Driver Training Program

Hungary Today 2024.03.05.

Over 8,500 individuals have already enrolled in free driver training programs nationwide as part of a government initiative launched on March 1, hirado.hu reports.

The program allows participants to acquire category C, C+E, or D driving licenses at no cost, with a refundable 30% fee if the applicant works in the sector within the country for a year. The aim of this subsidy is to address the shortage of drivers.

The program has seen a surge in interest, particularly among young people. This year, 45 graduates successfully obtained licenses for trucks and buses.

Ferenc Kiss, managing director of VOKSH Educational Ltd, noted the increasing demand for online drivers’ training. Applicants undergo a theoretical section followed by a computer-based exam before proceeding to the practical training. The duration of practical training varies depending on the license category.

Despite the benefits of the program, obtaining a driving license can be costly, ranging from HUF 600k to 700k (Approximately EUR 1,500 to 1,700). To alleviate this financial burden, the government is now providing subsidies for the training.

Applicants must meet certain requirements, including a basic education and possession of a category B license. There are also age restrictions for some categories, and medical fitness checks are mandatory.

The 30% course fee is refundable upon completion of one year of work in the sector within Hungary.

This initiative has received widespread interest, with 8,500 applications received within days of its launch.

Erzsébet Almási, Managing Director of OFA Nonprofit Ltd, emphasized the appeal of jobs in passenger and freight transport due to higher earnings. Completing the program opens doors to employment opportunities with leading employers.

One such company in Szeged (southern Hungary), involved in domestic and international freight transport, is actively seeking skilled drivers. However, the sector faces challenges, including high turnover rates and a shortage of experienced drivers.

The driver shortage is crucial, not just in Hungary but across Europe,

where an estimated 400,000 drivers are currently needed. Without intervention, this figure could reach 750,000 unfilled positions by 2028. Recognizing the strategic importance of transport and logistics, this program aims to boost employment and address labor shortages, contributing to economic growth.
