Opposition Parties Demand Answers Regarding Drone Carrying Explosive That Flew over Hungary

Hungary Today 2022.03.21.

In an open letter, opposition members of the Defense Committee called on House Speaker László Kövér to immediately convene a committee meeting in the case of the military reconnaissance drone that was crossing Hungarian airspace almost a week and a half ago, and then crashed in Zagreb.

Politicians of opposition parties MSZP, Jobbik, and DK have sent an open letter to the house speaker, asking for the Defense and Law Enforcement Committee to be convened over the military drone which has recently crossed Hungary, because it was cancelled by the Fidesz chairman of the committee “without explanation” just a day before it was scheduled to begin.

The signatories, Ágnes Vadai (DK), Tamás Harangozó (MSZP), and László Lukács (Jobbik), wrote in a statement that they had called for the committee to be convened several times, but committee head Lajos Kósa either did not convene the meeting or, when he finally did, he canceled it less than 24 hours before the start of the session without giving any reason or explanation.

Opposition politicians recalled the unprecedented incident in which a Tu-141 Soviet-era military reconnaissance drone entered Hungarian airspace on the night of March 10th and had been flying over Hungary for 40 minutes.

The politicians outlined that the drone, which eventually crashed in a populated area of Zagreb, weighed 6 tons, and according to official reports was equipped with an explosive device. However, for more than a week now, the Hungarian authorities have not provided any information to Hungarian citizens, apart from the fact that they detected, monitored, and controlled the device.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine poses a threat to Hungary, the MPs noted in the letter, adding that it is reasonable to assume that the current government is “trying to hide something.” This is a threat to not only the security of Hungarians, but also to the authority of the National Assembly,” they stressed.

The opposition committee members are demanding not only the meeting to be called to session, but also that all government officials be present and brief the committee on the drone incident.
