‘Operation Kabul’ Chronicles Hungarian Soldiers’ Heroism in Afghanistan

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.15.

Filming has begun for Operation Kabul, a Hungarian military themed drama capturing the dramatic 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan. Directed by Zsombor Dyga, the film blends real events with fictional elements to tell the story of Hungarian soldiers’ heroic efforts during the chaotic NATO withdrawal.

The movie portrays Operation Shaman’s Shield, where Hungarian forces rescued 540 people, including 180 children, from Kabul as the city fell to the Taliban. The film explores both the harrowing conditions of the evacuation and the personal stories of the soldiers involved.

Filming commenced in early August, with scenes shot in various locations, including Zsámbék’s (near Budapest) quarry, which has been transformed into a realistic Afghan military camp. Director Zsombor Dyga remarked,

this was the first story where I felt that content and form truly aligned,” highlighting the film’s blend of action, emotion, and reality.

Producer Tamás Lajos noted, “the heroic action of Hungarian soldiers has great cinematic potential, aiming to create an exciting and spectacular film.”

Supported by the National Film Institute and produced by Szupermodern Studio, with additional backing from Sárkányok Produkció Ltd. and MTVA (Media Services and Support Trust Fund), the film is set for release in autumn 2025. The production features over 10 main actors, 25 supporting actors, and 6,000 extras. The film’s extensive post-production will involve VFX, music, and sound, ensuring a high-quality portrayal of this pivotal rescue mission.
