Olympic Champion Zoltán Kammerer Elected Mayor of Göd

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.05.15.

Zoltán Kammerer, honorary citizen of Göd, multiple Olympic, world, and European champion kayaker, was elected mayor with 58.28% of the votes. Kammerer ran as an independent.

Zoltan Kammerer, the pride and honorary citizen of Göd, the three-time Olympic and world champion kayaker, was elected mayor of the town with 2,034 (58.28 percent) of the votes, according to the newly published data of the National Election Office. Although Kammerer ran as an independent, he was supported by Fidesz-KDNP and Bence Tuzson, MP for the region representing the governing party.

The problems have been ongoing since the municipal elections in October 2019. In the previous term, the town in Northern Hungary was governed by a Fidesz majority, but three and a half years ago the left won the local elections. The candidate for the radical leftist student movement Momentum, Csaba Balogh, became mayor, and in principle they could have governed Göd with a comfortable majority (8:4) until the end of their term. It quickly became clear though that instead of a commonality of values and identity of principle, only power interests bound the leftist coalition together.

After a year, the eight-member coalition was split into three factions, and left-wing politicians soon found themselves at odds with each other. Most of them have since left the party. As a result the majority behind the very young – at present 34-year-old – inexperienced mayor was gone, and after lengthy debates, he resigned as mayor at the beginning of February this year.

Just a year ago, the mayor of Göd told the city’s internet portal that

he had never thought that running the town would be such a challenge. He wanted to bring success to the city, and he would have been able to do much more if he had not had to fight against such headwinds.

Thanks to the election results, the victory of Kammerer means that the 11-member body of the town council has enough votes to secure a qualified majority, and a peaceful political balance can be restored in Göd.
