Olympic Champion Speed Skater Shaoang Liu Tests Positive for Covid-19 Ahead of Beijing Winter Olympics

Olympic champion short track speed skater Shaoang Liu, who was part of the relay team that won Hungary’s first Winter Olympic gold medal in 2018, tested positive for Covid on Monday.

The Olympic champion athlete will be unable to travel with his teammates, who are scheduled to leave for Beijing on Wednesday morning.

Shaoang Liu needs to present negative tests for five consecutive days to join his teammates in the Chinese capital, the Hungarian National Skating Federation said.

The 24-year-old Olympic champion speed skater is symptom-free and under constant supervision, as he continues his preparations for the Beijing Olympics, the Federation added.

Four years ago in PyeongChang, the Hungarian short-track speed skating relay team of Shaoang Liu, Shaolin Sándor Liu, Viktor Knoch, and Csaba Burján won Hungary’s first-ever Winter Olympic gold medal in an amazing race.

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games officially begin on February 4th in the Chinese capital. The following day, Hungary will compete in the mixed relay, of which Shaoang Liu was a regular participant during qualifications.
