The number of people moving from Western Europe to Hungary due to migratory pressure has increased by between 20% and 47% in recent years, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior said on Tuesday in Budapest, at the farewell ceremony of the new Hungarian police contingent to Serbia.
Bence Rétvári noted that since the beginning of the migration crisis in 2015, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people who are resettling in Hungary because of the public conditions in Western Europe and in order to ensure their safety. He added that 47% more people from Belgium, 20% from France, 43% from the Netherlands, 20% from Germany, 40% from Spain, 28% from Switzerland, 25% from Austria, 45% from Italy, and 22% from the UK “have moved to Hungary in recent years than before 2015.”
While illegal migration poses an increased threat to Hungary, there are no migrant-related riots and violence, which are common in many Western European cities, especially around New Year’s Eve.
The state secretary stressed that the members of the unit heading to Serbia have an important and increasingly difficult task, as they are working together with their counterparts in Serbia and Austria to protect Hungary and the European Union from the increasing migratory pressure.
Rétvári recently visited Hungarian police officers on the scene, and said he had met one who was on his eighth mission.
Last year, almost 400 Hungarians took part in the missions,
he added.
The politician also pointed out that there are many people who are not interested in stopping illegal migration, but in organizing it, which is why the migration pact was adopted in Brussels, distributing migrants among EU Member States on the basis of various quotas, even ignoring previous agreements. According to Rétvári, in the European Parliament elections in June, significantly more people than before will vote for political forces opposed to migration.
He underlined that the country and Hungarians have already clearly rejected migration on several occasions, and the new national consultation, open until January 17, is another opportunity to do so.
